Roll-to-Roll Magnetron Sputtering System for PI Film Copper Metallization

Roll-to-Roll Magnetron Sputtering System for PI Film Copper Metallization

SIMVACO designs roll-to-roll (R2R) magnetron sputtering systems for depositing thin copper seed layers on polyimide (PI) film. The systems are designed for continuous web metallization in flexible copper-clad laminate (FCCL) and flexible printed circuit (FPC) material manufacturing, providing a conductive foundation for subsequent electroplating.

Equipment configurations can be tailored to substrate width and thickness, target copper thickness, electrical requirements, coating uniformity and production throughput. The sputtering system performs the vacuum deposition stage; downstream electroplating and other finishing processes are handled separately.

Key Features

  • Copper Seed-Layer Deposition: Deposits a thin copper layer on PI film as a conductive base for subsequent electroplating.
  • Continuous Roll-to-Roll Processing: Supports continuous web transport for production-oriented PI film metallization.
  • Configurable Deposition Process: Sputtering cathode arrangement, power configuration and deposition zones can be evaluated according to target film properties and throughput requirements.
  • Controlled Web Handling: Unwinding, web tension control, web guiding and rewinding can be configured for the substrate dimensions and handling requirements.
  • Application-Based Process Evaluation: Copper thickness, sheet resistance, film continuity, adhesion and coating uniformity can be assessed against agreed process targets.

Applications

The system is intended for vacuum deposition of copper seed layers on PI film, particularly as a preparatory step in flexible circuit material manufacturing.

  • PI film metallization for FCCL and FPC material production
  • Roll-to-roll copper seed-layer deposition before downstream electroplating

For PI films with pre-formed through-holes, hole-wall coverage and electrical continuity require separate process evaluation. Conventional planar magnetron sputtering does not inherently ensure continuous copper coverage inside through-holes; feasibility depends on hole geometry, deposition configuration and the required coverage.

Reference Technical Parameters

The following values provide a preliminary reference for project evaluation. Final equipment specifications depend on the substrate, coating targets and production requirements.

Substrate Polyimide (PI) film
Reference PI Thickness 6–20 μm
Reference Web Width Approx. 260 mm
Coating Material Copper (Cu)
Reference Copper Seed-Layer Thickness 50–200 nm, subject to process validation
Sheet Resistance To be defined according to the target film properties and electrical requirements
Web Speed To be determined according to deposition rate, target thickness and production throughput
Deposition Process Roll-to-roll magnetron sputtering
Downstream Processing Electroplating or other subsequent processes, as required by the customer's production flow

Note: The web width, PI thickness and copper thickness listed above are reference design inputs, not guaranteed standard equipment specifications. Actual deposition performance depends on the sputtering configuration, process conditions and substrate properties. Copper thickness, sheet resistance, adhesion, film continuity and coating uniformity should be verified through process trials or agreed acceptance testing.

How the Process Works

  1. Unwind: Feed the PI film into the roll-to-roll web-handling system.
  2. Establish Vacuum Conditions: Evacuate the deposition chamber and establish the required process conditions.
  3. Deposit Copper: Use magnetron sputtering to deposit the copper seed layer onto the moving PI film.
  4. Rewind and Transfer: Rewind the coated film for inspection and subsequent processing, such as electroplating where required.
